Rx

Last weekend I scored the short film "Rx". Surreal, with a Donnie Darko/Total Recall-type plot, the film follows a young artist and his troubles with reality.

I felt that a style similar to the music by Jim Dooley for "Pushing Daisies" would really suit the film, as the story struck me as a kind of tragic fairytale.

Film scoring is essentially storytelling and my score parallel's the main character's mood. Starting off quite low and miserable, intriguing in the middle, and ending fairly jolly and upbeat, I think the music really carries you through the story, emphasising what the character is feeling at any given moment and keeping the viewer interested in the plot.

There is a motif I used repeatedly throughout the score, played by a treated mallet, at the moments where the nature of reality is questioned and when the main character takes "magic pills". It's nice to be able to have complete creative freedom in a project, and I enjoyed employing non-orchestral elements for a change, because familiar sounds could never represent a "reality in question".

I wrote 12 cues for this film, but there were a hell of a lot of scenes. I usually like to write fewer and longer cues but it depends on editing, which is one of the most influential factors on how I approach scoring a film.

I didn't have much time to score this film, so I couldn't be as creative as I'd have liked to be, but it's certainly unique.

Thanks to Jessie Wesley and Ben Ross for the opportunity!

You can view the film here:

I haven't uploaded a cue from this film to my myspace account, as they were all too short to warrant an upload, but I've added a few more of my compositions so please go check them out:
